Mesolithic & Neolithic Source Screening

Mesolithic & Neolithic ancestry.
Compare the sources.

Compare your raw DNA with Mesolithic hunter-gatherers, Neolithic farmers, and other reference populations. Explore one-to-five-source models, with every source named and every mixture open to inspection.

This module is suitable only for Europe, West Asia, and North Africa. Future modules may focus on other regions.

Mesolithic hunter-gatherer DNA

Mesolithic reference populations represent hunter-gatherer communities that lived in Europe before the spread of farming. This panel includes Loschbour in Luxembourg and Mesolithic groups from France, Scotland, and Spain. Compare which of these references appear in closely fitting models and how their weights change when the other sources change.

Neolithic farmer DNA

Ancient DNA research connects early European farmers with Neolithic populations from the Aegean and northwestern Anatolia. The screening panel includes Barcın Neolithic, Sardinia Neolithic, and France Neolithic, alongside early farming and herding communities from West Asia and North Africa. Keeping these sources separate lets you compare specific reference mixtures.

How much hunter-gatherer or early farmer ancestry do I have?

Source screening explores that question by fitting combinations of named populations to your genetic data. A source percentage is its weight in that particular model. Several mixtures can fit closely, and a Neolithic source can itself carry ancestry from earlier populations. Compare alternative models and their unexplained contrasts before interpreting a percentage as a broad ancestry component.

Use your existing raw DNA file

Start with an autosomal raw DNA export from 23andMe, AncestryDNA, MyHeritage, FTDNA, or Living DNA using GRCh37 positions. The tool compares observed SNP calls with its reference panel for Europe, West Asia, and North Africa. You can also explore the Sardinian example to see ranked models, source weights, and downloadable reports before uploading.

1

References, with their names attached.

Sources are reference populations used to model patterns of shared genetic variation. A source can represent ancestry related to that population or a broader genetic pattern it captures. Its percentage is the weight assigned in this model; it does not establish direct descent from that specific population.

2

A closer fit needs context.

Lower scores indicate closer fits within the selected source count. Scores account for uncertainty and depend on the reference panel and coverage. These exploratory distances are not qpAdm p-values. Additional sources can improve the score; compare models within each source count.

This is a fixed, mainly ancient reference panel. Every reference retains its own identity; similar ancestry backgrounds do not make two sources interchangeable. Select a source to read a brief historical description.
